Transit-time Ultrasonic Flowmeter

It must be a new term for those who do not know what Transmit-time Ultrasonic Flowmeter is.

Transit-time Ultrasonic Flowmeter is a special device that measures the velocity of liquids or gas with the help of ultrasonic transducers. Transducers mean that they convert energy from one form to another. The very important thing that you get in them is the maintenance cost which is very less because they are not movable or there are no moving parts. They are becoming very useful for the manufacturers who need to check the density and viscosity of their latest products in the petrochemical, water & wastewater, power generation, mining & aggregates, food and environmental industries.

There are various types of ultrasonic flowmeters such as: -

  • Transmission (contra propagating transit-time) flowmeters
  • Reflection (Doppler) flowmeters
  • Open-channel flowmeters

Let us discuss the famous Transit-time ultrasonic flowmeters.
Transit-time ultra sonic flowmeter is the commonly used flowmeter used for gases and liquids. They are basically recommended for the use in clean liquids such as water, glycol, oil and most chemicals. The ultrasonic signal travels through all common metal and plastic pipe materials. There are lots of benefits of having a transit-time ultrasonic flowmeter because it experiences the specialties in no system downtime for installation, no system contamination, no pressure drop, no moving parts and no risk of leaks.

These meters operate by comparing the time for an ultrasonic signal to travel the time for an ultrasonic signal to travel with the flow (downstream) against the time for an ultrasonic signal to travel against the flow (upstream).  The difference between these transit times is proportional to the flow and thus the flow meter converts this information to flow rate and total. By using the absolute transit time and the distance between the ultrasound transducers, you can easily find the current speed of sound with the transit-time ultrasonic flowmeter. The measuring effect can be adversely affected by many things including gas and solid content.

How transit-time ultrasonic flowmeter actually work
Usually this time of transit-time ultrasonic flowmeter is also called as “time of flight and time of travel”. In this flow meter the sonic beam is at 45 degrees angle with one transducer located upstream of each other. Each transducer alternately sends and receives ultrasonic energy. The difference in transit time and thus the speed of sound in a liquid is calculated. You get the varying results which are slightly affected by temperature, density or viscosity of the flowing medium.

This type of flowmeter compete with lots of challenges such as treating short circuit waves in pipes, provides good signals results even if the pipe is old or damaged or the fluid is low conducting, provides user friendly interface with more functionalities with reduced costs.

Thus there are lots of advantages of using the transit-time ultrasonic flowmeter in the industries to ease out the functioning, manufacturing and testing liquids.
